Electroluminescent (EL) wire

I decided to play with some EL wire and chose to attempt to put it on canvas in the shape of the biohazard symbol. ☣

List of parts used:

  • 10′ of EL Wire – Angel Hair 1.2mm in blue (CoolNeon.com or Elumiglow.com or other places)

  • An AA Handheld Driver, which comes with an EL Wire-Side Connector

  • A black 12″x12″ canvas, which you could get a Michael’s, most other art supply stores or Amazon

  • Fishing line

Now the question was how to get the the wire in the shape of the Biohazard symbol. I printed out the logo and attached it to the back of the canvas to use as a template. Then it was just a matter of using fishing line to sow it on through the template tracing the wire on the front of the canvas along the way.

Overall it turned out pretty decent. Now I just have to find a spot for it. Maybe I’ll wire it up to the light switch in my work room so it comes on every time I’m in there or add a motion detector that turns it on when I walk in.

The Angel Hair EL wire was very easy to bend and sow on the canvas and it’s fairly bright with a nice contrast between the black canvas and the EL wire.

Off to the next project. 😁
